Q’s story chosen for FL Early Steps promotion and fundraising efforts!

Quinn’s remarkable story of the advances she made through Florida’s Early Steps program and early intervention has been selected by the state of Florida to be used in raising funds and promoting the Early Steps program! Yay!

Here is the uncut story we submitted to the state DOH:

What causes ASD?

Is it genetics, the environment, mom’s pregnant stress, vaccines, total randomness?

When I look at what we went through with Quinn – and again, because of her rate of improvement and progress she always stayed matching-two-blocks-and-pointing-at-a-bear ahead of an actual diagnosis – I can tell you our story and what I think contributed to her issues.

The perfect nerd storm

One therapist tried to explain to my husband and I the “super nerd” theory of the autism spectrum, where certain mental and personality traits are concentrated and passed down until they become overwhelming. A perfect storm. Nerds beget nerds.

Your child’s therapist: Not your therapist

When you need a little more conversation, there is an audience that can’t escape your ramblings: your child’s therapists. Part of their job is to listen to your concerns. Your concerns about your child.

Tradesies, keepsies

When she started therapy, part of me was afraid of the change, and part of me was upset knowing that if these therapists saw things that needed changing, other people were seeing it too. And that might be all they could see. In the end, there were trade-offs.
